Hard water, explained
Is your water hard? Look for these signs
Florida tap water comes from limestone aquifers, so most homes we test are hard. The damage builds slowly, which is why people often notice it late.
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. It is safe to drink, but it leaves scale in pipes, water heaters and appliances, spots on glass and a film on skin and hair. A whole-home softener removes those minerals where water enters the house, so every tap, shower and appliance gets soft water. The USGS explains how hardness is measured.
White crust and scale
Chalky buildup on faucets, shower heads, ice makers and the dishwasher.
Spots on glass
Water spots on dishes and a cloudy film on glass shower doors.
Soap that will not lather
You use more shampoo, soap and detergent and still feel a film.
Dry skin, dull hair
Showers leave skin tight and hair flat, even with good products.
Stiff, dingy laundry
Towels feel scratchy and whites fade faster than they should.
A noisy water heater
Popping or rumbling as scale builds up at the bottom of the tank.
How it works
How a whole-home water softener works
Water passes through a tank of softening resin that trades hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium. Our most popular system adds a carbon stage for chlorine.
- Demand-initiated valves regenerate only when you have used the soft water, not on a timer
- NSF/WQA-certified resin and components
- Carbon filtration removes chlorine and chloramine taste and smell
- A bypass valve lets you shut the system off for service in seconds

How hard is the water where you live?
Florida first, Texas second. Published readings where they exist, and an in-home water test everywhere.
South Florida draws on the shallow Biscayne Aquifer and the surficial aquifer system. Central Florida drinks from the Floridan Aquifer, one of the largest limestone aquifers in the country. Both pick up calcium and magnesium on the way to your tap. Your utility publishes an annual water quality report you can find through the EPA Consumer Confidence Report lookup.
Our water softener company measures hardness in GPG and PPM at your kitchen sink, so the system is sized to your real water, not a county average.

Questions
Water softener company FAQ
Straight answers before you book.
What does a water softener company do?
A water softener company tests your water, recommends a system, installs it and services it. Softer Water Co. does all four: an in-home water test, a written quote, free installation by licensed plumbers and ongoing service and salt delivery.
How much does a water softener cost installed?
The price depends on your hardness, home size and the system you choose, so we quote it in writing after the in-home water test. Installation is included, and $0-down financing is available for qualified buyers.
Do I need a softener if my city already treats the water?
Usually, yes. City treatment makes water safe to drink, but it does not remove hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium), and most utilities add chlorine or chloramine. That is why our most popular system pairs softening with carbon filtration.
How long does installation take?
Most installs take three to four hours. A licensed plumber installs the system, tests it, shows you the bypass valve and cleans up before leaving.
Which areas do you serve?
In Florida: Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties in South Florida, and Orange, Seminole, Osceola and Polk counties in Central Florida. In Texas: Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bell and McLennan counties. See the service areas page for every city.
Is Softer Water Co. a franchise?
No. We are a locally owned water softener company, founded by Kevin L. Walker. There are no franchise royalties built into your price.
What are your hours?
Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 7 PM Eastern (Florida time). Closed Sunday. You can also message us any time with the chat button.
